The Full Story

After surviving a terrible disease that has engulfed your little village, you must assist people in need by trekking into the treacherous cave system in search of a remedy, the rare Bell Flower. You must utilise your unique talent of utilising visualised sound to lead yourself through the cave system and obtain the Bell Flower while trapped in full darkness. The noises you make by moving, stomping, and tossing pebbles will disclose the form of the surrounding world for a short time until they evaporate. It won't be long before the cave system's lone method of detection warns and attracts the cave's ravenous residents.

Surviving is the most important aspect of this game. Echolocation is a top-down 2D puzzle game in which the player controls a mute protagonist called Whale in a fully pitch-black world and navigates them through a maze-like area while avoiding dangers and enemies. With 100+ various levels of increasing complexity and a countdown of 10 minutes per level, the player must make their way to the Bell Flowers in each level and return towards their entrance in order to depart the cave and complete the level.

One of the first things I had to accomplish in my first year of university was this prototype. The task was to produce a Game Design Document (GDD) for a game that I had to design. I loved the notion of a dungeon crawler, but I wanted to give it my own spin. The next term, I was required to establish a group in which we would select one of our GDDs and turn it into a prototype.
